In today’s world, with little need to move around and easy access to foods that aren’t very good at helping our bodies and minds perform how they need to, it’s hard to be healthy. In fact, it requires knowledge and skill.
Before the 1950s, keeping our bodies and minds in good shape was easy. Most people moved around because they had to – transportation was often bicycling or walking, and work included physical labor. To have fun, kids played outside with other kids in the neighborhood. People didn’t have as many foods to choose from. Also, the foods people ate were more often home-made from fresh ingredients. These foods helped them stay fit and active. Today, we don’t have to move very much. We can ride in cars to get to school or stores instead of walking. We can have fun playing video games or watching tv instead of going outside. There is a lot more food to choose from and the food we usually choose isn't very good at helping us to be active or stay in good shape. This means that we have to think about what foods to eat and activities to do so that we can stay fit and strong.
