Launched in 2012, the goal of 5th Gear Kids was to educate 5th grade students about energy balance (the relation between food intake and physical activity) and to collect and analyze data for the resulting impact on childhood obesity trends. Through an innovative partnership with the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Aurora Public Schools, and the Cherry Creek School District, we have accomplished just that!
The feedback we have received from kids, parents, and educators about the validity of 5th Gear Kids has been overwhelmingly positive. With their input, we’ve been able to improve the program each year for greater impact. Our challenge now is to determine if this program can be retooled to be self-sustainable and scalable to all Colorado school districts and across the country. This will take some additional time and investments. In the short term, please continue to access the resources available on this site to support your efforts to educate kids and families about energy balance as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Thank you for your interest in promoting healthy kids and families, and please stay tuned for future updates!
